Estimate target distance from apparent size
For field and 3D archery, knowing common target sizes helps estimate distance. Use a consistent reference in your scope or sight housing. The apparent size method uses: Distance = (Actual Size x Magnification) / Apparent Size. When shooting uphill or downhill, use the horizontal distance for your sight mark, not the slope distance. This is the cosine-corrected distance shown when you enter a slope angle.
