The USCG capacity formula applies to monohull boats under 26 feet. Larger vessels and pontoons may have different ratings stamped on their capacity plate.
Weight Distribution Tips
- Distribute weight evenly from bow to stern and side to side
- Keep heavy items low and centered
- Never exceed the capacity plate rating on your boat
- Account for fuel, water, and ice weight (water: 8.3 lbs/gal, fuel: 6-7 lbs/gal)
- In rough water, reduce passenger count below maximum
- Children count as passengers for capacity purposes
