Dovetail Joint Types

Through Dovetail

Both tails and pins visible from outside. The classic joint for drawers and boxes. Strongest mechanical interlock and a hallmark of fine craftsmanship.

Half-Blind Dovetail

Tails hidden on one side. Used for drawer fronts where you want a clean face. Pins are cut shorter than the board thickness.

Sliding Dovetail

A tapered dado joint. One board has a dovetail-shaped tongue that slides into a matching groove. Great for shelves, table leg-to-apron joints, and breadboard ends.

Secret Mitered

Fully hidden dovetail behind a mitered corner. Maximum strength with no visible joinery. The most challenging dovetail to cut by hand.
