Frequency Bands Overview

20-60 Hz
Sub Bass
Felt more than heard. Rumble, weight. Too much = muddy. High-pass most tracks above 40-80 Hz.
60-250 Hz
Bass
Warmth and body. Fundamental of bass guitar, kick drum punch. Common mud buildup zone.
250-500 Hz
Low Mids
Body and fullness. Too much = boxy, honky. Cut here to clean up muddy vocals/guitars.
500 Hz-2 kHz
Midrange
Core tone and presence. Most audible range. Where instruments compete for space in a mix.
2-4 kHz
Upper Mids
Presence and clarity. Vocal intelligibility lives here. Boost for cut-through; too much = harsh/fatiguing.
4-8 kHz
Presence
Definition and attack. Sibilance zone (5-8 kHz). De-ess vocals here. Clarity for guitars and cymbals.
8-20 kHz
Brilliance / Air
Shimmer, sparkle, airiness. Boost gently for openness. Too much = harsh, fatiguing, sibilant.
