How to Find the Key of a Song

Identifying the key of a song is one of the most useful skills for musicians, producers, and DJs. The key tells you which set of notes (a scale) a piece of music is built on, making it easier to play along, transpose, remix, or harmonize.

How This Tool Works

Click the notes you can identify in a song. The tool compares your selection against all 12 major and 12 natural minor scales and ranks them by how well they match. A 100% match means every note you selected exists in that scale.

Tips for Identifying Notes

• Start with the bass note or the note the song feels like it "rests" on -- that is often the root.
• Hum or sing the melody and match each pitch to a piano or tuner app.
• Pay attention to the first and last notes of phrases -- they usually belong to the key.
• If two keys match equally, the one whose root note sounds like "home" is likely correct.

Major vs Minor Keys

Major keys generally sound bright and happy, while minor keys sound darker or more emotional. Every major key has a relative minor that shares the same notes (e.g., C major and A minor). Context and the root note determine which one the song is actually in.
