Tips to Improve Reading Speed
- Minimize subvocalization. Try to reduce the habit of "speaking" words in your head. Visual recognition is faster than internal speech.
- Use a pointer. Guide your eyes with a finger or pen along the lines. This reduces regression (re-reading) and keeps your pace steady.
- Expand peripheral vision. Practice taking in groups of 3-5 words at a glance instead of reading word by word.
- Don't re-read. Trust your brain to absorb information on the first pass. Resist the urge to go back unless absolutely necessary.
- Set a timer. Practice reading with a time goal. Slight pressure helps your brain focus and process faster.
- Read more often. Like any skill, speed improves with practice. Read diverse material daily to build vocabulary and pattern recognition.
- Preview the text. Skim headings, bold text, and the first sentence of each paragraph before deep reading. Context helps you process faster.
- Eliminate distractions. Find a quiet environment. Even background noise forces your brain to work harder to concentrate.
