How Social Security Benefits Work

Full Retirement Age (FRA) depends on your birth year: 66 for those born 1943-1954, gradually increasing to 67 for those born 1960 or later.
Early Filing (62-FRA): Benefits are permanently reduced. The reduction is 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months before FRA, plus 5/12 of 1% for each additional month.
Delayed Credits (FRA-70): Benefits increase by 8% per year (2/3% per month) for each month you delay past FRA, up to age 70.
Spousal Benefits: A spouse can receive up to 50% of the worker's FRA benefit. Early filing reduces the spousal benefit. Delayed credits do not apply to spousal benefits.
