Tap along the wall with your knuckle. A dull, solid thud means you're over a stud; a hollow echo means empty cavity. Move in small increments to narrow down the edges.
Drywall screws holding the panel to studs are ferrous. Slide a strong magnet slowly across the wall — it will snap toward the screw heads, marking stud centers accurately.
Outlet and switch boxes are almost always nailed to the side of a stud. Check which side of the box feels solid when tapped — the stud is typically 16" or 24" from there in either direction.
Baseboards are nailed into studs. Look for small nail dimples or filled nail holes along the baseboard — they mark stud centers running up the wall.
