Channel Width Explained
- 20 MHz — Standard width. Best compatibility and least interference. Use in crowded environments.
- 40 MHz — Double throughput. OK on 5 GHz; avoid on 2.4 GHz (only room for 1 non-overlapping).
- 80 MHz — 5 GHz / 6 GHz only. Great for high-speed devices close to the router.
- 160 MHz — Maximum speed for WiFi 5/6. Limited channel availability; may trigger DFS.
- 320 MHz — WiFi 7 only. 6 GHz band exclusive. Highest throughput possible.
Tips for Choosing the Best Channel
- 2.4 GHz: Stick to channels 1, 6, or 11. These are the only non-overlapping channels.
- 5 GHz: All channels are non-overlapping at 20 MHz. Prefer lower UNII-1 channels for no DFS restrictions.
- Use a WiFi analyzer app to see which channels your neighbors use, then pick the least crowded one.
- DFS channels (52-144) offer less congestion but may briefly disconnect when radar is detected.
- Distance matters: 2.4 GHz travels farther through walls; 5/6 GHz is faster but shorter range.
- Upgrade path: WiFi 6E/7 on 6 GHz is virtually interference-free due to low adoption.
