글자를 고를 때는 브라우저의 암호학용 난수(crypto.getRandomValues)를 씁니다.

How password strength is actually measured

Strength is counted in bits of entropy, and for a randomly generated password the arithmetic is exact: entropy = length × log₂(size of the character set). A 12-character password drawn from 62 characters (a–z, A–Z, 0–9) carries 12 × log₂(62) ≈ 71.5 bits. Add symbols to make the set 94 and the same length carries 12 × log₂(94) ≈ 78.7 bits.

The table below is the same formula applied across lengths. Notice which column moves the number more — going from 12 to 16 characters buys more than adding symbols does.

Length62 chars (no symbols)94 chars (with symbols)
    847.6 bits52.4 bits
    1271.5 bits78.7 bits
    1695.3 bits104.9 bits
    20119.1 bits131.1 bits
    24142.9 bits157.3 bits

That is why length beats complexity. Each extra character multiplies the search space by the whole character set, while adding a symbol class multiplies it once.

Why this only holds for random passwords

The formula assumes every character was chosen independently at random. It says nothing about a password a person invented. “P@ssw0rd!” has the same length and character classes as a strong 10-character string, but it is a dictionary word with predictable substitutions — a cracking tool tries those patterns first, so its real strength is a tiny fraction of the nominal figure.

The same applies to a word with a year on the end, a keyboard run, or a name with a capital at the front. Composition rules that demand one of each class tend to push people toward exactly these patterns, which is why current guidance leans on length and on blocking known-breached passwords rather than on character-class rules.

Passphrases, and the number behind them

A passphrase of randomly chosen words has entropy you can also count: entropy = number of words × log₂(list size). Six words from a 7,776-word list give 6 × log₂(7776) ≈ 77.5 bits — about the same as a random 12-character password with symbols, and far easier to type on a phone.

The catch is the word randomly. Words you picked yourself because they are memorable are not drawn uniformly from the list, and a phrase that is a quotation has almost no entropy at all. Dice or a generator, not intuition.

    More answers

Is anything typed here sent anywhere?

No. The generator runs in your browser and uses the browser’s cryptographic random source. Nothing is transmitted and nothing is stored on a server.

How long should a password be?

Long enough that you are not relying on secrecy of the method. For accounts behind a password manager there is no cost to 20 or more characters, so use it. For something you must type by hand, a long random passphrase is usually the better trade.

Do I need to change passwords on a schedule?

Scheduled rotation without a reason tends to push people toward small predictable edits. Change a password when there is cause — a breach notice, a shared device, a suspicion — and make each one unique so one leak does not travel.

What makes reuse the worst habit?

Credential-stuffing attacks replay leaked pairs against other sites automatically. A unique password per account means a leak at one service is contained to that service, regardless of how strong the password was.
