4. Do's and Don'ts
Do's
- Start low concentration, increase gradually
- Apply only at night on dry skin
- Use SPF 30+ every morning without exception
- Moisturize generously -- before or after retinol
- Wait 20 min after washing before applying
- Store in a cool, dark place (opaque packaging best)
- Be patient -- results take 8-12 weeks
- Patch test on jawline for 3 nights first
Don'ts
- Don't mix with vitamin C, AHA/BHA, or benzoyl peroxide on the same night
- Don't use if pregnant or breastfeeding
- Don't apply to wet or damp skin
- Don't wax areas where retinol is applied
- Don't start with 1% -- even if you're "tough"
- Don't use around lips, nostrils, or eye corners directly
- Don't skip sunscreen the next day, ever
- Don't give up during purging (weeks 2-6)
Ingredient Conflicts
- Vitamin C -- use in AM, retinol in PM
- AHA/BHA -- alternate nights, never same night
- Benzoyl Peroxide -- deactivates retinol on contact
- Niacinamide -- safe to combine
- Hyaluronic Acid -- safe, great buffer partner
- Peptides -- safe on alternate nights
