Belt size vs waist size: what is the difference?
They are two different measurements. Waist size is your body or your trousers; belt size is the length of the belt itself, measured from the fold of the buckle to the middle hole — usually your waist measurement plus about two inches.
The two extra inches are not padding. They cover the thickness of the trousers, the belt loops and the tail that has to reach the keeper after buckling. Order a belt in your jeans size and it will usually buckle on the last hole or not reach at all, which is the single most common sizing mistake.
How long does a leather belt stretch?
Full-grain leather gives a little with wear — typically enough to reach the next hole over a year or two of regular use. It is not enough to rescue a belt that is a full size short, and bonded or genuine-leather belts tend to crack rather than stretch.
Stretch comes from the fibres compressing and the holes elongating, both of which happen fastest where the belt bends at the buckle. If a belt has stretched past comfortable, the usual answer is a new hole punched one notch in rather than a new belt. If it stretched within weeks, it was probably too tight to begin with.

How to Measure for a Belt
- Use an existing well-fitting belt: Measure from the buckle fold to the hole you normally use — that's your true belt size, which is usually longer than your pants waist size.
- Or measure your waist directly: Wrap a soft tape measure around your waist where you'd wear your pants, keeping it snug but not tight.

EU sizes are usually stocked in steps of five centimetres, so a conversion will often land between two labels. Round to the nearer one, and round up if the belt is thick or will be worn over a waistband.
Measuring without a tape
Use a belt that already fits. Lay it flat, then measure from the fold where the leather meets the buckle bar to the hole you actually use — not to the end of the tail and not to the first hole. That length in inches is the size to order.
If you only have a tape, measure around the trouser waistband where the belt will sit, with the trousers on and the tape snug but not pulled tight. Add two inches. Measuring bare skin at the natural waist gives a smaller number and will produce a belt that buckles on the last hole.

Yes. Worn low on the hips a belt needs to be longer than one worn at the natural waist, because the circumference there is larger. Measure at the height you actually wear it.
