What are the odds of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot?
One in 290,472,336. The figure comes from the game's own format rather than a quoted source: five numbers from seventy gives 12,103,014 combinations, and each of those pairs with one of twenty-four Mega Balls. The game changed on 8 April 2025 — the Mega Ball pool shrank from twenty-five to twenty-four, so figures quoted before that date say 302,575,350 instead.
Why is the cash option so much less than the jackpot?
The headline jackpot is an annuity paid over thirty years. The cash option is a significant share of it, and this page uses that ratio, so the number you see advertised is cut before any tax is taken.
How does the calculator work out federal tax?
It takes 24 percent of the whole payout, the federal withholding on large lottery prizes, then adds the gap up to the 37 percent top rate on the part above $640,600, the 2026 single-filer threshold in IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32. Withholding is not the final bill; the difference is settled when you file.
